Sleep Disorders and Snoring Surgery

As a partner of Eurosleep, the European competence center for sleeping disorders and snoring surgery, we aim to unify diagnostics and therapy and make them internationally comparable. We also seek to agree upon therapeutic adjustments as a multi-center group. We have access to the experience of over 15,000 surgeries, interventions, and diagnostic sleep studies. The data and results produced are anonymously consolidated and discussed regularly, on the expert level, at round table conferences.

The foundation of our work is in diagnostics. The basic challenge of interventional and surgical sleep medicine is accurate determination of the location of the problem. As is well-known, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea occur through reduced muscle tone during sleep and collapse of the airway. The actual site of the collapse cannot be determined using conventional investigative methods. However, in our Center we use Apneagraphy, a diagnostic tool that we apply to determine the pressure conditions in the nasopharyngeal tract / upper airway tract and upper gastrointestinal tract during sleep. The evaluation is carried out together with the Department of Somnology at Oxford University.

These investigatory results and video-endoscopic findings produce a complex framework from which we formulate an individualized therapeutic approach. Minimally invasive or surgical interventions are not necessarily mandatory. In certain cases, options such as mandibular guards /anti-snoring mouth guards , or gastric ballooning can be more appropriate. However, in the event a surgical intervention is necessary, we perform it with the gentle Coblation Surgery. A major advantage of coblation over that of other radio frequency methods is the minimal thermal damage to adjacent tissue. These procedures are standardized according to the Eurosleep criteria and the Eurosleep Coblation Technique. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, semiconscious sedation, or general anesthesia.
